Itinerary Suggestion

☀️ DAY 1 – WELCOME TO JAPAN!

🔸Start: Upon arrival at Tokyo’s Narita or Haneda Airport, after clearing immigration, collecting your luggage, and passing through customs, you will be met in the arrivals hall by a staff holding a sign with your name. You will then be transferred by private vehicle to your accommodation in Tokyo.
🔸Highlights: Check-in at a city hotel. You will receive a small welcome package at your accommodation, including essentials such as rail tickets and IC transport cards. Please pick it up at check-in and take a moment to review the contents. Basic instructions on how to read Japanese train tickets are included. Day 1 is typically reserved for arrival and rest, allowing time to recover from travel fatigue and jet lag before starting your adventures the following day. Tokyo is often imagined as a bright, busy city filled with neon lights—and while some areas are exactly that, there’s much more to discover. Beyond the main streets are countless quiet neighborhoods with small local shops, thoughtfully designed cafés, cozy restaurants, and tiny bars. Tokyo is one of the world’s most exciting cities for food, culture, and the arts, but what many travelers love most are its calm side streets and hidden corners, where you’re likely to stumble upon one lovely spot after another.
🔸Meals: Lunch and dinner at your leisure. Restaurant reservations in Japan are taken very seriously, and last-minute cancellations are considered rude. For this reason, we usually keep dining plans flexible and reservation-free, and recommend consulting your hotel concierge for assistance.

☀️ DAY 2 – FULL-DAY TOKYO CITY TOUR

🔸Start: Your local guide will meet you at your accommodation and begin a city tour with an introduction to Tokyo. Along the way, your guide will show you how to use your IC transport card and share helpful tips for getting around the city.
🔸Highlights: You will visit Asakusa and Nakamise Street, a lively, low-rise area that blends Tokyo’s old and new. This neighborhood is home to Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple. Depending on timing, you may spend the afternoon exploring on foot, browsing local shops, and enjoying casual street food and local specialties. A visit to Senso-ji, dating back to the 7th century and considered the heart of Asakusa, is a highlight of the area. Continue on to Ueno and Ameyoko or Yanaka to enjoy a nostalgic, old-town feel and a glimpse of everyday local life.
🔸Meals: Breakfast is included. Lunch will be enjoyed with your guide and paid directly on the day. Dinner is at your leisure; you may wish to make a reservation for a classic Japanese tempura course meal, also to be paid on the day.

☀️ DAY 3 – BEHIND THE SCENES OF SUMO WRESTLERS IN TOKYO

🔸Start: Your driver will pick you up from your accommodation early in the morning and take you by private vehicle to the sumo stable to observe sumo wrestlers’ morning practice.
🔸Highlights: Visit an active sumo stable and observe morning practice from close range, gaining insight into sumo, one of Japan’s oldest and most respected traditions. Watch as lower-ranked wrestlers (rikishi) begin training, followed by senior rikishi, and experience firsthand the surprising speed, strength, and agility they display during practice. This rare behind-the-scenes visit offers a glimpse into the daily life, discipline, and dedication of sumo wrestlers, and if permitted, there may be an opportunity to take a photo with a rikishi after training. Continue exploring the city at your own pace in the afternoon.
🔸Meals: Breakfast is included in your stay. Lunch and dinner at your leisure.

☀️ DAY 6 – TRAVEL TO KANAZAWA VIA SHIRAKAWAGO VILLAGE

🔸Start: Depart Takayama by private vehicle and travel to Shirakawago Village (approx. 1 hour). After your visit, continue by private vehicle to Kanazawa (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes), enjoying scenic mountain views along the way.
🔸Highlights: Visit Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage village famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, and walk through the historic settlement to learn about its unique architecture and rural way of life. Enjoy the scenic drive through central Japan’s countryside and alpine landscapes, and experience the contrast between the peaceful mountain village and the refined atmosphere of the elegant castle town of Kanazawa.
🔸Meals: Breakfast is included in your stay. Lunch and dinner at your leisure.

☀️ DAY 7 – FREE DAY - KANAZAWA CITY EXPLORATION

🔸Start: Begin your day at your own pace, heading out from your hotel to explore Kanazawa independently using local transport or on foot.

Continue to the Nagamachi Samurai District, where preserved lanes and earthen walls evoke Kanazawa’s past as a castle town. Enjoy a traditional tea ceremony experience in Kanazawa, a city well known for its deep connection to tea culture and refined arts. Explore the Higashi Chaya District, a historic geisha quarter with wooden teahouses, cafés, and craft shops. Consider visiting Nishiki Market to sample local foods and Kyoto specialties, then stroll through Teramachi Shopping Street, which offers a mix of traditional shops and modern boutiques. End the day with a walk along Pontocho Alley, a narrow riverside lane known for its atmospheric dining spots and classic Kyoto charm.
🔸Meals: Breakfast is included in your stay. Lunch and dinner at your leisure.

☀️ DAY 9 – FULL-DAY KYOTO CITY TOUR

🔸Start: Your local guide meets you at your accommodation after breakfast to begin your first full day exploring Kyoto with a private guide.
🔸Highlights: Visit some of Japan’s most famous temples and shrines, including the hillside Kiyomizu-dera and the iconic red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine. Along the way, discover Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage as your guide shares insight into both well-known landmarks and everyday local life.

☀️ DAY 10 – ARASHIYAMA LANDSCAPES & JAPANESE CRAFTSMANSHIP

🔸Start: After breakfast, using taxis and public transport, travel to the western edge of Kyoto, about 20–30 minutes from central Kyoto by train. Arashiyama sits along the Katsura River, at the foot of low mountains, which is why the area feels greener and more open than downtown Kyoto.
🔸Highlights: Arashiyama is best known for the bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, and several temples and gardens. In the afternoon, take part in a hands-on workshop that goes beyond shopping, offering insight into the craftsmanship behind Japanese kitchen knives. Choose your preferred knife style from Santoku, Deba, or Yanagiba, then learn how to sharpen the blade and attach the handle under expert guidance. Through this process, gain a deeper appreciation of Japanese knife-making techniques. Your finished knife can be taken home as a meaningful and practical souvenir.

🛶PROGRAM SUMMARY:

  • The Grand Japanese Tapestry is a curated 18-day journey designed for travellers who want Japan’s icons and its quieter, more textured layers—without rushing. It pairs efficient rail travel with a handful of private transfers and carefully chosen cultural experiences.

  • You begin in Tokyo, where modern Japan comes alive through neighborhoods, markets, and the city’s distinctive mix of tradition and cutting-edge energy. After settling in, you’ll take in Tokyo’s historic heart—temples, old-town streets, and everyday local life—before gaining rare insight into Japanese tradition with a behind-the-scenes sumo practice visit.

  • From the capital, the route shifts into the landscapes of central Japan. Travel into the Japanese Alps to Takayama, a beautifully preserved mountain town known for its old wooden streets, riverside morning market, sake breweries, and slower pace. The journey continues through one of rural Japan’s most iconic settings: Shirakawago, a UNESCO-listed village of steep-roofed farmhouses and alpine scenery, before arriving in refined Kanazawa—a city of gardens, samurai heritage, teahouse districts, and contemporary art. Here, you’ll experience a traditional tea ceremony in a place famous for craftsmanship and cultural elegance.

  • Next comes Kyoto, Japan’s classical soul. With multiple nights to settle in, you’ll explore landmark temples and shrines with a private guide—hillside views, historic streets, and the unforgettable corridor of torii gates at Fushimi Inari. Beyond the headline sights, Kyoto invites you into food markets, atmospheric lanes, and the city’s everyday rituals. A full day in Arashiyama adds greener scenery—bamboo groves, river landscapes, temples, and a hands-on Japanese knife craftsmanship workshop, turning cultural appreciation into a tangible skill and souvenir.

  • A key emotional and spiritual shift follows as you travel to Mount Koyasan for an overnight temple lodge stay (shukubo). This is one of Japan’s most meaningful experiences: a calm, sacred setting, a vegetarian shojin-ryori dinner rooted in Buddhist tradition, ancient cedar forests, and a chance to attend morning prayer. It’s a pause that many travellers describe as the reset point of the trip—quiet, reflective, and deeply Japanese.

  • From there you descend into the bright, food-loving pulse of Osaka. An evening in Dotonbori delivers the neon-lit energy Japan is famous for, paired with classic local street dishes and a friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere. You’ll also have time to explore independently—Osaka Castle, shopping districts, skyline viewpoints, museums, and endless casual dining.

  • To round out the journey, you’ll slow down again in Kurashiki, a historic canal town with white-walled merchant houses, willow-lined waterways, galleries, and cafés—an ideal contrast to the megacities and a perfect place to breathe. Optional cultural add-ons (canal boat ride, art museum, or a short side trip to Okayama’s celebrated garden) let travellers shape their final days.

  • You return to Tokyo for a final night—ideal for last souvenir shopping, a favorite neighborhood revisit, or one more great meal—before a smooth transfer to the airport.
