Suggested Itinerary
Rome & The Underground Church
Explore the imperial roots, early Christian communities, and the spiritual heart of Rome and the Vatican.
☀️ DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN ROME: IMPERIAL ROOTS & SACRED BEGINNINGS
Start: Arrival at Rome Fiumicino or Rome Ciampino Airport and private transfer to the hotel in Rome.
Highlights: Check-in and time to settle in. In the early evening, meet your tour leader and group for a relaxed welcome briefing introducing the theme of the journey: the underground Church, early Christian Rome, monastic discipline, sacred craft, and living traditions. Welcome dinner in Rome.
☀️ DAY 2 – ROME & VATICAN CITY: THE UNDERGROUND CHURCH
Start: Breakfast at the hotel in Rome.
Highlights: Begin with the Papal Audience at St. Peter’s Square, subject to the Vatican schedule. Continue with a guided exploration of early Christian Rome, including the spiritual and political world that shaped the first Christian communities. In the afternoon, follow the Via Appia Antica on foot for an ancient Roman road hike, before continuing to an atmospheric catacombs visit with a focus on the hidden Church, burial rituals, symbols, and early Christian identity. In the evening, enjoy an exclusive after-hours Vatican Museums experience, subject to availability.
Subiaco: The Birth of Monasticism
Experience the legacy of St. Benedict in the serene Aniene River Valley, combining spiritual history with artisan craft.
☀️ DAY 3 – THE BIRTH OF WESTERN MONASTICISM
Start: Breakfast at the hotel, then private transfer from Rome to Subiaco.
Highlights: Travel into the Aniene River Valley, where the urban intensity of Rome gives way to cliffs, forests, monasteries, and mountain air. Visit the Monastery of St. Benedict, dramatically built into the rock above the valley, with a guided cliffside walk connecting the landscape to the origins of Benedictine monastic life. After lunch, take part in a medieval scriptorium-inspired calligraphy workshop, learning how manuscripts, discipline, silence, and repetition shaped the intellectual life of Europe. Later, enjoy a monastic herb and botanical garden lecture focusing on healing plants, food, medicine, and self-sufficiency in monastic communities.
☀️ DAY 4 – RIVER VALLEY, CRAFT & CONTEMPLATION
Start: Breakfast at the hotel in Subiaco.
Highlights: Begin the day with an active outdoor experience in the Aniene River Valley, such as kayaking or a guided soft-adventure river activity, depending on season, water levels, and operator availability. The experience connects the physical landscape to the idea of retreat, silence, and separation from the world. In the afternoon, return to Subiaco for a deeper visit of the monastic sites, including time for photography, reflection, and a short guided discussion on the Rule of St. Benedict and why monastic discipline became so influential across Europe.
Monastic Resilience & Architecture
Reflect on history at Montecassino and admire the Cistercian Gothic architecture of Casamari.
☀️ DAY 5 – MONTECASSINO: RESILIENCE, DESTRUCTION & RECONSTRUCTION
Start: Breakfast at the hotel and private transfer toward Montecassino.
Highlights: Arrive at the Abbazia di Montecassino, one of the most important monastic sites in Europe. Begin with a high-altitude ridge walk or panoramic approach, using the surrounding terrain to understand why this place became both a spiritual stronghold and a strategic wartime position. Continue with a World War II battleground historical briefing, explaining the destruction of the abbey and its later reconstruction. Visit the abbey, museum areas, and, where available by arrangement, a monastic library or archive-focused experience. End the visit with an abbey herbal liqueur tasting or monastic product tasting.
☀️ DAY 6 – STONE, WATER, VINEYARDS & SACRED CRAFT
Start: Breakfast at the hotel and private transfer to Casamari Abbey.
Highlights: Visit Casamari Abbey, one of the most powerful examples of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Central Italy. A guided photography session helps guests read the building through proportion, light, silence, stone, and monastic restraint rather than only through dates and names. Where scheduling allows, experience Cistercian Gregorian chant or vespers. Continue to Isola del Liri for an urban waterfall walk. Later, travel toward the Castelli Romani for a panoramic Lake Nemi stop and a short volcanic landscape walk. Continue with an ancient monastic vineyard visit or wine estate experience, followed by a practical sacred art restoration studio class. Farewell group dinner.
